is there any easy software i can use to convert a DVD to a video file so i can put it on my iPod?

I need a file sharing software that is free, safe and legal. Can some one suggest something?

The 15min is in the middle of the original mp3 file. And I want the cropped audio to be also in mp3 format. My assumption is that once I do that, my new file will be much smaller in file size, proportional to the duration of the clip relative to the original.

i.e i get a file from net it is 2 mb when i open it it gies 700 mb os.

All i want to do is backup my data, not rip dvds, it came with nero and it’s backup adds certain file extensions to the files so that if i want to restore them,i have to use nero to do it. I just want a software that will burn data just like a cd burner that once it’s done,if i need to get a file off of it, i can just drag and drop back onto my pc.
