Logitech Webcam records .avi file movies but won’t play on Windows Media Player?

I take care of my daughter during the day and record videos from my webcam to send to mom. She receives them in a .avi format and plays them on Windows Media Player, or at least tries to. She can hear the audio but can’t see the video which defeats the purpose of sending my videos. Does she need to install a “codec” on her Windows XP machine? Can you point me in the right direction, i.e. Link to download correct software? I don’t believe the webcam can record in any other format.

I need to convert one MPG file to AVI, which is the best software for that? Is there any freeware avalible?
I tried in my Adobe premier, but Mpg file is not playing correctly on it. I also tried WinMPG Video Convert, its not also giving good result… If anyone can suggest freeware its also good…
